Restless nights. Sleepy days.

Symptoms

Sleep apnoea reduces the quality of sleep and can cause a number of symptoms:

  • Snoring
  • Wake from sleep with a choking sound or gasping for breath
  • Agitated, non-restful sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Daytime sleepiness, including a tendency to fall asleep inappropriately
  • Difficulty concentrating and loss of memory
  • Morning headaches
  • Frequent need to urinate during the night (nocturia)
  • Libido problems

Being overweight (obesity) very often contributes to the development of these symptoms.

These symptoms affect quality of life and can have repercussions on your body as a whole, leading to other serious conditions, such as high blood pressure, strokes, heart failure, diabetes, brain damage and depression. Excessive daytime sleepiness can adversely affect cognitive function and could result in job impairment and traffic accidents.

The sleep quality of partners may also be affected.
